A lesser movie might have grown boring with this structure, having sacrificed story and character for chase scenes. However, The Road Warrior uses action to tell the story, to develop character. This is how the old westerns did it, and it’s too bad that this structure isn’t really used anymore.

In the end the movie is really a statement on heroism, delving into Joseph Campbellian mythological structure and coming up with what many Australians consider to be “Star Wars Down Under”. It’s certainly one of the most successful films to ever come out of that country, and is still considered a national treasure of the Australian cinema all these decades later.

The movie follows a typical Japanese salary man who, for no reason at all, starts to sprout pieces of scrap metal from his body. The movie follows The Goonies, led by Mikey Walsh, son of a museum curator. This gang of misfits hails from the Boon Docks of Astoria, Oregon. The movie really kicks into the story when the rich folks in Astoria decide they’re going to buy the Goonies’ neighborhood, tear it down, and build a golf course in its place. Boooo! The Goonies take it upon themselves to save the Boon Docks. They start by getting into the attic, where Mike’s dad, a museum curator, has a bunch of old pirate stuff stashed. They find a treasure map leading them to an old restaurant on the coast. The restaurant is run by the Fratellis, a low rent crime family led by Ma Fratelli, a serious ball buster who takes a sort of Bates Motel approach to mothering her children, played by Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano. They have to figure out how to get under the restaurant to get the treasure without alerting the Fratellis and…

It sounds like a lot of information to take in all at once: Pirates, the mafia, buried treasure, foreclosures… But if you just stay along for the ride, you don’t have to worry about keeping track of all that. Just enjoy it for what it is, a fast paced, action filled adventure romp through caves and crypts, culminating in a showdown on an underground pirate ship.

Really, the movie’s all about fun. It’s a really silly, fun, exciting movie, partly because it doesn’t go all the way into fantasy territory. Unlike Monster Squad, everything that happens in The Goonies technically COULD happen in real life… It’s not very likely, but within the context of the film, it feels about as real as anything in Stand by Me. The film follows Bruce Leroy, or so is his nickname. He’s a young martial artist from Harlem who works for his father’s pizza parlor while teaching Kung Fu to the local neighborhood kids. Throughout his adventures, he also has to keep his cool and composure while dealing with his rival, Sho’Nuff, who’s always trying to get a rise out of him. Sho’Nuff, you see, is the Shogun of Harlem… Yep, the Shogun of Harlem. That’s what he likes to call himself.

He really is a great character. Maybe one of the all time classic comedy movie villains. He’s colorful, ridiculous, short tempered and always funny. He wears visor sunglasses (You know, the ones that look like horizontal blinds), as well as shoulder pads, hakama (the baggy pants you always see in samurai films), and a top knot/Rick James kind of hair style. It’s just plain hilarious watching him come on screen. He always starts with his big introductory piece, demanding that his lackeys affirm his meanness, badness and prettiness before engaging in any business.

The only downside to the movie is the comparatively less interesting subplot revolving around a really, really awful Cyndi Lauper style singer and her manager/boyfriend who’s trying to get her some airtime on a local music show, produced and hosted by Bruce Leroy’s would-be-lover. This subplot isn’t the most interesting part of the film, but fortunately it’s not a main focus.

And of course, it does pay off in the end when the manager hires all the baddest dudes in the city to have it out with Bruce Leroy and his students. These “bad dudes” include a big fat old white guy with a Mister T Mohawk and an all gold one piece suit… Yep, real bad dudes, these guys.

There are also some really fun, corny moments along the way. At one point, Leroy tries to seek wisdom from the guy who writes the fortune cookies at the local Chinese restaurant, only to find that they’re written by a computer. Therein he finds that zen wisdom of emptiness and being.

Could the movie have been better without the weird subplot about the record promoter? Sure, but even so, it’s one of the all time classic eighties flicks, and one of the best attempts at spoofing the Kung Fu genre while at the same time honoring it. It’s also just plain a whole lot of fun.

This movie came after Boaz Yakin’s self imposed exile. At a certain point, he became disillusioned with the film industry and declared that he would be taking a hiatus from writing, at least until he felt he had something important to say. The result was a movie that truly does make a powerful statement.

The film follows a young boy working as a drug mule for various mid-level dealers around the city. He makes anywhere from twenty to fifty bucks a run, and he’s been storing that money in a coffee can by the railroad tracks. The money really adds up when you save it, and Fresh is saving it. For what? We won’t say. Save to say that the way the movie plays out is really something.

Each week, Fresh spends one afternoon playing chess with his father who offers him guidance and a moment to reflect upon what’s going on in his life. These are sort of the Greek chorus scenes of the film, allowing both Fresh and the audience to consider what has happened before and where the movie is going to go from here. The chess also serves as a metaphor for what Fresh is doing while on the clock.

The movie is sort of like Fistful of Dollars as a hood story. Two of Fresh’s friends are killed by one of the dealers he works for, and he takes it upon himself to exact an incredible revenge plan that gives you one surprise after another. Fresh is a young man of incredible intelligence, and his scheme is one of the all time greatest plots in film history.

Fresh’s scheme to take the badguys down is really incredible, serving as a fascinating parallel to the chess games he plays with his father. The master stroke of his plan is that none of his opponents suspect him of a thing, as he is, after all, just a kid. He essentially manages to play dumb and innocent, while in fact outsmarting everyone around him.

The movie is, at times, brutally and shockingly violent. This is necessary to drive home the reality of Fresh’s situation. He’s not in a good place in life, his bosses menace him and threaten him with death at every turn, and he walks a tightrope in order to keep himself alive while at the same time taking down the people who torment him and his friends and family.

The film is truly one of a kind. Clockers runs in a somewhat similar vein, but Fresh is built around a truly unique concept. The movie takes a young child, around ten years old, and pits him against ruthless, violent, sociopath criminals. It’s not a children’s movie, even though the hero is a child. It is a film about the power of morality and righteousness over compromised morality and cruelty, and truly a fascinating thriller.
